Showing the power of a smile through experiential campaigns
Smiling is contagious. “this is because we have mirror neurons that fire when we see action. These neurons enable us to copy or reflect the behavior we observe in others and have been linked to the capacity for empathy”. Dr. Eva Ritzo, a psychiatrist and the co-author of “The Beauty Prescription: The Complete Formula for Looking and Feeling Beautiful”. “When someone smiles at you, you feel the good vibes from them, which makes you want to pass a smile on the next person, and so on and so forth. We should make a conscious effort not to take smiles from our loved ones fro granted, and to keep in mind that across the globe smile can mean so much more than a simple facial movement” Jasmine Wang, communications manager at Smile Train, a charity providing corrective surgery for children with cleft lips and palates.
Over half a million people go homeless on a single night in the U.S. 700 homeless people are killed from hypothermia annually, a leading and preventable cause of death. The most common type of mental illness among homelessness are affective disorders such as depression. New studies prove that raising body temperature could be a more effective and better treatment for depression.
In 2008, scientists in the UK found that people don’t even need to see a smile to perceive it. We can pick out the sound of smiles when merely listening to someone speak. Not everyone has the same number of facial muscles allowing each individual to have their own range of smiles. By contracting or expanding our facial muscles in different degrees and combinations, we can produce thousands of different messages (emotional state, mental wellbeing, personality, mood, physical health, creditability, etc.)

U.S SMILE CAPITAL: SMILE DAYS FESTIVAL
In 1948, the Mayor of the City of Pocatello, Idaho; passed an ordinance making it illegal not to smile. Re-discovered in December 1987 by staff and local reporter who wrote an article about banking laws, it provoked a visit from representatives of the American Bankers Association, who declared the city the “U.S. Smile Capital”. In the spirit of fun, the event was perpetuated by making a Smile Festival called “Smile Days”, an annual event.
Studies like 2014’s Jetpack City Guides app and 2020’s WalletHub have given “smile” and “happiness” scores to the happiest places in the U.S. based on the size of the smiles, analyzing millions of photos on Instagram and positive-psychology research with 30 indicators of happiness. The results: #1 smiling city was St. Louis, followed by Kansas City, MO. and Columbus, OH. In Fact, 7 out of 10 smiling-est cities were in the Midwest. The Happiest cities were Fremont, CA; Plano, TX; San Jose, CA; Irvine, CA and Madison, WI
